We usually forget these important things

Forgetfulness is a misplaced virtue almost all of us behold. As we grow up, we tend to forget many things. While in the school days the frequently forgotten item is that mathematics formulae or the historical event which carries a huge load of 2 or 10 marks! In one gathering I was addressing the senior citizens; I asked them, ‘what is that one thing that you have most frequently forgotten in your life?’ Majority of the people answered, “Spouse’s birthday!”

Well, in today’s column I have listed a few such forgettable items. I am sure you will, as well, agree that the cost of forgetfulness sometimes becomes exorbitantly high and the compensation becomes impossible.

1.    You are going by road to a long destination which might be outside your city. You ensure to fill up the fuel tank with gas sufficient to run you through those miles. Well, most of the times you forget to check if the stepney is in proper functioning form! A flat tire on the way and then you find out that the spare wheel is low on air pressure or unusable; you realize the importance of not forgetting to do this check right before you start!

2.    Most of us forget to switch off the idiot box after use or at night.  Likewise we forget to switch off our computer and other peripheral devices, such as printer, scanner etc. Usually the logic thrown by intelligent and smart people is that the television or computer consumes only a miniscule energy and as such there is no major loss. Friends when we sum up the drain of unused power at a national level, it adds up to an unimaginable enormity which is a criminal waste of earth resources.

A person left home and forgot to switch off the TV, it was raining and thunderous weather; lightening struck and as a result some component of the unit got damaged rendering the tv set unusable. The man learned this lesson after this tragedy. Most of us learn good habits only after paying the cost of forgetfulness!

3.    We are running through examination days and it has been observed that a big chunk of students forget to carry along their admit card and realize it only when they are asked for it by the examination incharge. The last moment anxiety and the runaround comes at the cost of lack of performance in examination inspite of having done a decent preparation!

4.    Forgetting of password is very common these days since we are overloaded with those for the various internet applications that we use. It has happened with me, I purchased a suitcase with a number lock long time back. At the time of purchase I registered a crazy number as the password, the intention behind was that no one should be able to guess it. Today after a few years when I wish to reuse it, I have forgotten the password and all imaginable combination of numbers have not worked!

5.    ECG reports are printed on graph papers using such ink which fades after some time. It is only when you have to re-hospitalize the patient after a long gap, it is realized that you should have kept photocopies of those ecg reports! Such reports help the doctor to study the case history and decide on the right line of treatment. Next time you get an ecg done for yourself or for any of your kith and kin, do not forget to take a photocopy / scan copy of the report.

6.    Forgetting to turnoff the running tap, the geyser button and the fan switch is very common, specially at public places like railway station, in hotel rooms or in government offices ( in chronological sequence).

7.    You read an important piece of information, an attractive advertisement on the billboard and think you would respond later on. Oops, when you decide to retrieve that information you realize you forgot to cut & save ( or scan and save) the news or to record that important phone  number!

8.    You purchased that very basic medicine called paracitamol some day when you needed it. The chemist gave you 6 tablets by cutting the medicine foil from the end which does not contain the print of the expiry date. Expiry date of medicine should be noted down on all purchased medicines lest, a few months later, you will not be sure whether to use or not the medicine.

Friends the list seems to be endless, we forget keys, mobile chargers and what not! We even forget to pray God and thank him for the things that happen to us in good times. What we do not forget is the ego hurt or the heart burn that we experienced years back!

A lot can be added to the list of important and critical things we tend to forget, why don’t you add up a few to this list!
